The Race that Inspired the watch:
Kamchadal 2004 InTERNATIONAL World Cup Dog Sled Race, Siberia
200 miles, in 72 hours, around 5 volcanoes in far Eastern Siberia; a Stage Race so extreme, it only happened once…
My name is Rob Valli, and I am the designer of the the OUTCAST bezel insert and dial. But before this, I was a professional dog sled racer for 12 years, and I raced all over the US, Canada, Alaska, and even won a Bronze Medal for the USA, in a 300km World Cup, in Far Eastern Siberia in 2004.
And it was actually THIS particular race, that inspired the design of the OUTCAST bezel insert and dial…
FUNCTION-First DESIGN:
The OUTCAST Watch isn’t just a product—it’s a solution to a problem I faced over and over again during some of the most demanding moments of my life, and I built it for people who need tools they can rely on.
In 2004, I competed in the Kamchadal World Cup Dog Sled Race in Siberia. Timing was everything—races like this aren’t just about speed, they’re about precision, endurance, and planning. But the watch I was wearing, a high-end dive watch, wasn’t designed for the kind of work I needed it to do.
I kept trying to use the elapsed timing bezel to calculate countdowns until my next heat, but it was frustrating. I had to keep resetting it for different tasks—timing the countdown to my next run, then switching to track elapsed race time. It distracted me at moments when I needed to be focused on the task at hand. That experience stuck with me. I thought, There has to be a better way.
Why I Built the OUTCAST
The OUTCAST was born from that frustration. I started imagining a watch that didn’t force me to compromise—a tool that could handle everything I needed without getting in my way. I didn’t want a luxury watch for display. I wanted a practical, reliable, and versatile tool. Every part of this watch was designed with that philosophy in mind.
On the dial, I kept things simple but functional. The 24-hour inner track makes it easy to use military or 24-hour time. The 3, 6, and 9 markers are non-luminous for a reason: in complete darkness, you need quick orientation. The lume on the hands and other markers gives you all the light you need to tell the time, but the design helps you find your bearings without wasting a second.
Lessons From the Field
Every design decision I made came from lessons I learned the hard way. I’ve raced in extreme environments, where tools either work, or they don’t. I’ve experienced gear failing in subzero temperatures, electronics breaking down, and watches that couldn’t handle the job they were supposed to do.
That’s why I chose the NH35 automatic movement for this watch. It’s mechanical—no batteries to freeze or fail in the cold. It’s reliable, serviceable, and recognized by watchmakers all over the world. If something ever happens to it, it’s easy to repair, and parts are everywhere. I’ve lived in conditions where you stop trusting things like electronics, and the NH35 felt like the obvious choice for this tool.
What the OUTCAST Means to Me
This watch isn’t about fashion. It’s not about showing off. It’s about solving problems and giving you something that works when you need it most. Whether you’re racing dogs across frozen tundra, navigating a trail, or timing something as simple as your morning coffee, the OUTCAST gives you the tools you need to do it.
For me, this watch is a reminder of the races I’ve run, the lessons I’ve learned, and the challenges I’ve faced. It’s about having a tool on your wrist that you can trust—because sometimes, that’s all you’ve got.
If you’re someone who values reliability, versatility, and rugged simplicity, I think you’ll appreciate the OUTCAST as much as I do. It’s not just a watch—it’s a piece of my story, and I hope it becomes part of yours.
How it works:
It’s Complicated…
But don’t let all those ‘complications’ scare you. Think of the OUTCAST like a Swiss Army knife, that you always have on you, just in case. Because there is only so much you can do with a standard elapsed time ‘dive’ bezel insert.
Who NEEDS a Watch Like This?
You. Yes, you, sitting there, reading this. Because EVERYONE needs to know how long it’s been since they put dinner in the oven, or when to switch their laundry. You don’t need to be a dog sled racer to appreciate the value of a countdown bezel; this bezel is full of everyday tools for everyday life, when you are aren’t on an expedition.
Countdown Timer
Use the countdown timer to countdown the minutes until an event happens, using the MINUTE hand.
Elapsed Time, in Minutes
Use the elapsed timer to mark the passage of time in MINUTES since an event took place, using the minute hand.
Compass Bezel
Point the hour hand to the sun. Split the difference b/t the hour hand & the 12 position; this is South, in the N. Hemi.
Second Time Zone
Use the 12 hour markings to keep of a second time zone, by setting it ahead or behind, and then just reading the time off this scale.
Elapsed Time, in Hours
Use the HOUR hand in conjunction with the 12 hour markings, in cases where you need to track elapsed time beyond 60 minutes.
Tide Tracking
Tides are based on a lunar day, but this tool predicts the next few tides, if you set it ahead about 50 min/day to keep it aligned.
