This is the sloped ceramic bezel insert from the original OUTCAST multi-function tool watch. One ring that does more than one job: timing, direction, second time zone, and tides.

What it is

What it does

The OUTCAST scale is laid out so one bezel can cover:

• Countdown – set how much time you’re counting down from against the minute hand and let it walk toward zero.

• Elapsed minutes – set the triangle at the minute hand when you start and read off elapsed time at a glance.

• Compass (Northern Hemisphere) – use the hour hand and sun to find south, then lock the bezel and use the markings as a simple field compass.

• Second time zone (12-hour) – offset the bezel by the hours difference and read a second zone where the hour hand points.

• Elapsed hours – use the 12-hour markings with the hour hand for longer jobs.

• Tide tracking – once you know the last high tide, set the bezel and walk it forward about 50 minutes per day to stay roughly in step.

You won’t use all of that every day, but it’s there when you need it.
